The new Korean Consulate of Guangzhou began construction Wednesday (June 29) in the Chigang consulate zone. The new office will be put into use next year, in time to mark the 20th anniversary of China and Korea's diplomatic relationship.
Preceded by the Thailand consulate, the Korean consulate will be the second of its kind located in Guangzhou's Chigang consulate zone.
To promote the ties between Korea and South China, the original Korean Consulate General was constructed in 2001. In 2010, trade volume between Korea and Guangdong exceeded USD40 billion.
Consul General of Korea in Guangzhou Mr. Kim Janghwan said the new consulate building will start construction on the current consulate's 10th anniversary, and will be put into use on October 15, 2012.
North of Youhe Lu and west of Youling Lu, the new consulate building has five floors including one basement. Covering 5,308 square meters, it was designed with elements of traditional Korean cloth texture, displaying early Korean culture in a modern manner.
